We are experiencing what is characterized as the biggest attack on the Atlantic Forest

Worrying actions by the Federal Government, such as an order from the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) that recommended that environmental agencies (Ibama, ICMBio and Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico) disregard the Atlantic Forest Law (nº 11,428/2006) and apply more under the Forest Code (Law No. 12,651/2012) for so-called consolidated areas in the Atlantic Forest domain. Fortunately, some state public ministries and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) recommended the non-application of this order, in addition to filing, together with the Brazilian Association of Members of the Public Ministry for the Environment (Abrampa) and Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica, an public civil against the order. This order has been revoked, but we have nothing to celebrate. It is just a change in the Government's strategy and the issue must now be decided by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

In addition, the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic has a draft decree that changes the boundaries of the Atlantic Forest domain, reducing its size and scope by more than 10% of its territory. This represents the loss of 110 thousand km² of the biome.

More recently, with the release of the video of the ministerial meeting on April 22, the interest of the Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles (non-party), became public. in “passing the herd” to dismantle the legal instruments to defend the environment and orchestrate attacks on the Atlantic Forest, an example cited by the representative of the ministry who should take care of the environment.

These facts are added to several other dismantlings by the current government, such as the National Environment System (Sisnama), weakening of environmental agencies, among other items on the already extensive list in less than two years of management.

All this can put the Atlantic Forest in a risky situation from which it will never be able to get out, affecting the lives and health of Brazilians. Those who defend the environment defend life and that's what we need to take care of even more now. The fight is for life!

That's why, even distant, we have to keep resisting. Together, we can save our forest, our rivers, our animals and ensure a healthy environment for everyone.
