New areas are being restored through Verde Novo. This time, forest restoration is taking place on the banks of the Rio das Antas, in Bueno Brandão/MG, in the Malacacheta neighborhood. 1,600 seedlings of native Atlantic Forest trees are being planted in an area of 9,000 m2.

The Rio das Antas is an important tributary of the Rio do Peixe. It starts in the State of Minas Gerais, in Bueno Brandão, passes through Monte Sião and flows into the municipality of Socorro, in the State of São Paulo. Its rapids make it a highlight, as the river is well known in the region.

The initiative to recover this area belongs to the Hotel Fazenda Terra dos Sonhos, which sought the support of Copaíba so that the Permanent Preservation Areas of the property are covered by native vegetation, contributing to the environmental adequacy of the hotel. In addition, the riparian forest that will form on the site will protect the water and the soil, preventing erosion and silting in the river bed. It will also be an important refuge for wildlife, since the animals use the riparian forests to move from one forest fragment to another, serving as an ecological corridor.

José Fernandes Franco, businessman and owner of the hotel, intends to recover the entire bank of the river. According to the Copaíba Forest Restoration Coordinator, Ana Paula Balderi, some stretches of the bank already have native vegetation and the proposal is to restore what is missing. “Soon, the riparian forest will be formed, performing its ecological function of even protecting the banks of this river”, comments the coordinator.

Verde Novo is a project carried out by Copaíba, sponsored by Petrobras, through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program. Its objective is to contribute to the forest restoration of the Peixe and Camanducaia river basins. This is done by supporting landowners, donating native seedlings, supplies and all the technical assistance necessary for the recovery of the area.

Landowners in the region interested in recovering the forests on their properties can contact Copaíba to receive support. Registration is done at the institution's headquarters.
