New Copaíba Forest Nursery starts production of native seedlings
Located in the Pedra Branca neighborhood, in Socorro
SP, the new Copaíba Forest Nursery started the production of tree seedlings of native species of the Atlantic Forest. The Viveiro belongs to the Copaíba Environmentalist Association, whose mission is to conserve and restore the Atlantic Forest of the Peixe and Camanducaia river basins.
Since 2001, the Viveiro has been producing native seedlings. It currently has the capacity to produce 300,000 seedlings per year and has already produced more than 1,600,000 seedlings. These seedlings supply Copaíba's own and third-party forest restoration projects.
Due to the expansion of institutional goals, the Nursery needed a larger area to expand its production and thus be able to recover more forests.
The 56,000 m2 property, which today houses the new Nursery, was donated to Copaíba in 2014 by Eliane Vaz Guimarães and Eliane Aparecida da Silva.
They had the dream of environmental conservation in that area, in addition to that, both became sensitive to Copaíba's mission and decided to donate the property, in the year the institution turned 15.
The production area of the new Forest Nursery is now over 5,000 m2, four times the area of the old nursery. With this new structure, the nursery can reach the capacity of 1 million seedlings produced per year. This will be planned from the next few years. Consequently more forests will be recovered in the region.
It is on this same property that the institution is recovering a forest of more than 30,000 m2. This area will be allocated to a Conservation Unit – Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), with the objective of perpetuating the forest fragment that is forming there, contributing to the conservation of fauna, flora, soil and also water.
Copaíba has had the voluntary support of several people and companies to move the new nursery. “Copaíba is grateful for all the effort and dedication that society and the City Hall have offered to the institution for this action to materialize. In particular, we thank Mayor André Bozola, Mr. Narciso Peroni, Paulo Mantovani, Mundo Novo Soluções, Irmãos Preto, Jarley Manias, Rubens Martins, Felipe Costa, João Sidney Balderi, Rubens Claudinei Formagio and the directors of Copaíba Gerson Silveira, Célio Morais and Dervino Santin who, in addition to the volunteer hours dedicated to board, put their “hands on” without measuring efforts with the executive team. It is thanks to these people and companies that we will continue to fulfill our mission, defending the Atlantic Forest”, thanks Flávia Balderi, Executive Secretary of the Copaíba Environmental Association.
