Copaíba recently signed a term of adhesion to the Agreement for the development of the Mantiqueira Conservative Plan, which will bring new possibilities to support the restoration of native forests in Socorro and the region, in addition to financial incentives for participating landowners.

The Mantiqueira Conservative Plan – PCM aims to promote the forest restoration of native species of the Atlantic Forest, in 1,200,000 hectares in the area of influence of Serra da Mantiqueira in more than 200 municipalities in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Janeiro, using the expertise of the municipality of Extrema in the execution of the Conservador das Águas Project, the first Brazilian experience of a forest restoration project using the PSA (Payments for Environmental Services) mechanism.

PCM COVERAGE AREA

The Plan's proposal is to use the economic instrument of payment for environmental services to promote forest restoration in the adaptation of rural properties, with expressive results in the production of environmental services, especially water.

Within this project, the municipalities involved are responsible for providing support with equipment and manpower to carry out the adjustments, in addition to having public policies approved for the feasibility of the project.

Serra da Mantiqueira is home to the springs of important rivers that feed the reservoirs of Furnas/MG, for the production of electricity, and supply the largest metropolitan regions in Brazil, São Paulo, Campinas and Rio de Janeiro. There are more than 280 municipalities in an area of approximately 100,000 km2 (1.2% of Brazilian territory) equivalent to the sum of the areas of the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, with potential for forest restoration of more than 1,200,000 hectares.

One of the Plan's strategies is to work by Nuclei, distributed throughout the Serra da Mantiqueira. 20 Nuclei were defined, responsible for a group of municipalities. Socorro, through Copaíba, is hosting Nucleus 20, which also covers the municipalities of Amparo, Itapira, Jaguariúna, Lindóia, Monte Alegre do Sul, Pedra Bela, Pedreira, Pinhalzinho and Serra Negra.
