The initiative is aligned with the UN's 2030 agenda and is available for partnerships with companies throughout Brazil.
Created in 2021 by Copaiba Environmental Association, the “Adopt a Forest” program allows companies to offset part of their greenhouse gas emissions by sponsoring the transformation of degraded areas into forests through ecological restoration. The initiative has already promoted the planting of more than 34,000 trees in the São Paulo region of Monte Alegre do Sul, an amount that — according to calculations by the Totum Institute and the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ) — corresponds to approximately 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide being absorbed by plants over their first 20 years of growth and removed from the atmosphere.
The program was born through a partnership with the logistics solutions company Jungheinrich-Brazil, which remains the main sponsor of the initiative and is responsible for more than 14 hectares of area undergoing restoration. In 2024, Copaíba also added to its portfolio of partners BEXP Group, operators of premium automotive brands such as Jeep, Porsche and Audi.
The “Adopt a Forest” project is part of a context in which 871% of Brazilian consumers choose to buy from companies with recognized sustainable practices, as indicated by the Union + Webster survey. Furthermore, the initiative is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 17 of the UN 2030 Agenda, which aims to strengthen the global partnership for sustainable development and revitalize the means of implementation. To this end, SDG-17 recognizes that sustainable development is only possible through collective efforts and emphasizes the importance of collaboration between different social and political actors.
Copaíba provides the services of the “Adopt a Forest” program to interested companies, upon prior contact using the form available on the website: https://copaiba.org.br/adoteumafloresta/. By committing to the program, companies can participate in the planting and visit the area under restoration, in addition to receiving a certificate for planted seedlings issued by Copaíba. In addition, companies contribute to the implementation of a socio-environmental responsibility action for the benefit of society, strengthening brand positioning, engaging customers and employees in causes relevant to society, among others.
The Copaíba Environmental Association operates in 19 municipalities in the eastern region of the state of São Paulo and southern Minas Gerais. The association currently promotes ecological restoration projects and programs; production of native seedlings; environmental education initiatives; and participation in public policies. In total, more than 4 million seedlings have been produced, 380 landowners have partnered in the planting of more than 1 million trees to restore more than 713 hectares of degraded areas, and 40,000 participants in environmental education experiences.
