During the visit, hosted and accompanied by the founders Flávia and Ana Paula Balderi, the mayor was able to get a closer look at the work and resilience of Copaíba, which has a 21-year history of defending the Atlantic Forest in the region. He also got to know the Viveiro Florestal and the RPPN – Private Reserve of Natural Heritage, in Copaíba, the only Conservation Unit of this category, approved in the municipality.
Ricardo was impressed and pleased with the national and international recognition won by the institution, which received, in 2020, the Muriqui Prize for Biodiversity Conservation, one of the most recognized and important honors in Brazil – recognized by the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – related to environmental actions in the Atlantic Forest.
The Copaíba team was able to learn about some of the commitments and concerns of the current municipal management of Socorro, in relation to the environment and sustainability.
The visit was of fundamental importance for the understanding of the activities of the Environmentalist Association Copaíba, which makes possible future partnerships with the public power, such as assistance in the elaboration of proposed laws in defense of the most threatened biome in Brazil, elaboration of the Municipal Plan of the Atlantic Forest.
As well as enabling partnerships with the development of conservation and restoration actions of native forest in the municipality and raising awareness of the importance of nature conservation with children, young people and rural producers, through experiences, dynamics and educational plantations.
