Copaiba launches preventative campaign against wildfires. 

With the arrival of the dry season, the Copaiba Environmental Association This month marks the start of a strategic mobilization focused on prevention. fires forests in the basins of the Peixe and Camanducaia rivers. The campaign's main objective is to consolidate the downward trend in environmental disasters observed in the last year.

After a 2024 marked by alarming numbers of fires In Brazil, the year 2025 brought a positive sign. Fire monitoring data indicates a reduction of approximately 23% in the area burned in the country compared to the previous year, in addition to a significant drop in recorded hotspots. “This result didn't happen by chance. It is the result of prevention actions, awareness campaigns, monitoring, and mobilization of different sectors of society,” said Ana Paula Balderi, coordinator of Ecological Restoration at Copaíba.

But the warning remains, because even with the reduction, fire still destroys thousands of hectares every year, and a large part of these fires could be avoided. Therefore, Copaíba is returning with the campaign this year, again partnering with some municipalities in the institution's area of operation, to raise awareness, educate, and prevent the dangers of wildfires. “The 2025 assessment showed us that information is the most effective tool against fire. We cannot lower our guard now that the drought is intensifying. Our goal in 2026 is to keep the rates low, protecting the springs and ecological corridors that guarantee water and life in our region,” says Ana Paula, from Copaíba.

The association invites the community to be the "guardians of the forest," reporting suspicious fires and adopting sustainable management practices, reminding them that burning trash or clearing land with fire is an environmental crime.

THE Copaiba Environmental Association Copaíba is a non-profit Public Interest Civil Society Organization (OSCIP) based in the municipality of Socorro (SP), which has been working since 1999 with the mission of conserving and restoring the Atlantic Forest in the basins of the Peixe and Camanducaia rivers.
