Socio-environmental organizations protest against bill that changes environmental licenses

Published On: 20 de May de 2019

On Tuesday (07/05) environmental organizations, including Copaíba, delivered a note of repudiation to the president of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia, on the bill (PL) 3.729/2004 of the general law of environmental licensing, which modifies rules for granting environmental licenses in the country. The vote was taken as an emergency and without the consent of civil society, with the justification that licensing is an impediment to development.

With the amendment of the law, the environment and the population will be less protected and their rights threatened, the right to information and participation of populations affected by disasters, as well as their representative bodies, will be excluded. Entrepreneurs will also be affected, as it will cause enormous legal uncertainty and increase social conflicts, shaking the country's economy.

In the letter, the entities emphasize that “Environmental Licensing is a mechanism created to guarantee environmental, social and legal security in the installation and operation of projects”, which will not happen if there is a change.
