New areas are reforested through a partnership between Projeto Verde Novo and Projeto Nascentes

Itapira is one of the 15 municipalities benefited by Verde Novo, a project sponsored by Petrobras through the Petrobras Socio-environmental program carried out by the Environmentalist Association Copaíba which, to date, has restored more than 230 hectares in the region with the planting of trees native to the Atlantic Forest. In addition to supplying the seedlings, the project offers support from planting to the care and development of the restored area.

In 2018 the owner Rafael Ribeiro decided to participate in the project after a meeting between farmers in the region held by the CDRS (Coordenadoria de Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável) from Mogi Mirim. “Native forest already existed on my property, but I decided to combine the useful with the pleasant: having a larger area of preserved forest and consequently benefiting even more the planting of corn, sugarcane and other crops that I do on my property” says the owner.

Rafael was a partner in a company for 15 years, but he decided to dedicate himself to property, cultivate plantations and now he has also become a forest conservator. In February, 2,500 seedlings were planted and another 2,500 will be planted by the end of this year. The owner also emphasizes “The benefits of having a forest on the property are intangible, it is something that brings long-term results. It's 1.5 hectares destined for conservation on my property”.

The reforestation carried out on Rafael's property was a partnership between two projects: Verde Novo, which contributed with support for forest restoration, and the Nascentes da CDRS de Mogi Mirim Project, which supported soil conservation actions, such as the implementation of level.

For Mayra Flores, from the Verde Novo technical team, responsible for the project to recover Rafael's property, this was the first positive result of the partnership between the projects. “The involvement of the owner is very important for the maintenance of the conserved areas. Soon, the banks of the stream that cuts through the property will be protected by riparian forest! The partnership is being super productive, because together we can support the producer more effectively and environmental gains are for everyone.”
