Copaíba takes stock of 2015 activities

Published On: 7 de January de 2016

In 2015 Copaíba completed 16 years and the work carried out in defense of the Atlantic Forest resulted in a positive balance that year.

At the Copaíba Forest Nursery, 280,000 seedlings of more than 100 species native to the Atlantic Forest were in the process of being produced. More than 200,000 seedlings were shipped from the nursery, that is, seedlings destined for the planting of forest restoration projects by the institution itself and by third parties.

In addition to production, Copaíba also planted 12,600 seedlings on 11.44 hectares, through the project Restoration of riparian forests of springs and water courses in the Rio do Peixe basin, financed by FEHIDRO – State Fund for Water Resources. It is worth remembering that it is not enough to just plant the seedlings, care is also essential after planting. In 2015, maintenance was carried out on more than 50 hectares (500,000 m2) of areas undergoing restoration, considering seedling crowning, ant control, fertilization, grass control, among other activities. The maintenance of these areas represents the direct care of 50 thousand seedlings, which are becoming trees in the municipalities of Socorro and Serra Negra/SP.

In addition, several environmental awareness actions were carried out. Through them, more than 1600 people were directly reached, who participated in lectures, educational planting, in the “Knowing the Nursery” program, among other practical activities developed with different audiences. “We consider that those people affected by environmental awareness actions become multipliers of this knowledge. Consequently, more people, in addition to these 1600, are being made aware of the conservation and restoration of the Atlantic Forest”, comments Flávia Balderi, Executive Secretary of Copaíba.

To develop all this work it is necessary to mobilize society, for this Copaíba has developed environmental policy actions, participating in federal, state and municipal meetings, forums and collegiate. In this way, the institution can contribute to improvements in environmental policies applied in each municipality in which it operates.

Copaíba is pleased to share the achievements and challenges overcome in 2015. The complete annual report will be available for consultation on the website www.copaiba.org.br from March 2016
