Copaíba supports the forest restoration of over 15,000 m2 in Serra Negra
The rainy season is coming to an end and the closing of this cycle is celebrated with the planting of over 3,750 new trees on two properties in Serra Negra/SP.
The Copaíba Environmental Association is responsible for this action. The NGO, which works in the region of the Peixe and Camanducaia river basins, supports landowners interested in voluntarily recovering the native forests on their properties.
These were the cases of the Serra Serena and Estância da Serra properties, both of which were visited by the institution's technical team to recover the surroundings of the springs and the banks of the streams that flow through the properties. This means that Serra Negra is gaining new areas of Atlantic Forest, which will contribute to improving water quality, expanding wildlife protection areas and consequently improving the municipality's environmental quality.
Thanks to the initiative of the owners and administrators of these areas, who sought the support of Copaíba, so that this good deed could begin.
Until today, there are almost 600,000 m2 of areas in Serra Negra that are in the process of restoration with the support of Copaíba. This area is equivalent to more than 60 football fields of native forests forming.
In the case of the Serra Serena site (headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris Retreats, in Serra Negra), the initiative to transform that area into an example of forest recovery was born more than 15 years ago, when those responsible for the property received, in 2000, a support from the Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture – ESALQ/USP in Piracicaba, for the recovery of the banks of the stream, planting 500 seedlings on site. Since then, other actions have been carried out, including the support of Copaíba. To date, more than 8,000 seedlings have been planted on the site. For Luciana Ferraz, coordinator of Brahma Kumaris, the partnership with the NGO is considered a success, where both parties are committed. “Copaíba has been offering us excellent quality seedlings and accompanying the planting, which is done on our own. It also monitors the reforested areas to ensure that we have taken care of the areas properly”, comments Luciana.
All forest restoration carried out in the hydrographic basins of the Peixe and Camanducaia rivers directly contribute to the benefit of the entire population of the region, as the restoration of these forests today will guarantee the water of tomorrow.
