Good examples result in positive environmental actions in the Pedra Branca neighborhood, in Socorro
Planting forests is an action carried out for many years by the Copaíba Environmentalist Association. And this is only possible thanks to the partnerships made with landowners interested in recovering the forests on their properties – a work that can take years to see results, but which is well worth it. In addition to contributing to nature conservation, the good results inspire new people to be part of this important movement: protecting our water.
An example of this was the initiative of Antonio Donizete Carvelato, known as Tonhão, who sought out Copaíba a few years ago to help him recover his spring, as the water was drying up. Just over 1000 seedlings were planted in 2014 around the spring. Years later its source returned, and today the water is maintained and feeds a tributary stream of the Camanducaia River. Tonhão, proud of the partnership with Copaíba and also of his initiative, today became a disseminator of this idea.
It was there that Roberto Domingues de Lima (Sabiá), owner of a rural area in the Pedra Branca neighborhood, also concerned with protecting its source, followed the example of his friend and neighbor. In addition to encouraging forest recovery in the area, Tonhão actively participated in his friend's planting. For Roberto, this action, in addition to involving people, contributes to expanding the neighborhood's forests. “This is important, including for the producer's awareness of the care he must take with his 'breadwinners', with our most precious goods, which are land, water and air. With everyone's conscious use, no one will be lacking”, says Roberto, optimistic about his project.
For Copaíba, the more owners participating, the greater this current becomes. “The idea is exactly that: raising the awareness of the people involved and the importance of forest restoration being understood and disseminated by the participants themselves. Little by little, year after year, we have been doing very important work for the region and, in addition, counting on the help and trust of new forest planters”, comments Mayra Tavares, coordinator of forest restoration at Copaíba.
Verde Novo, a project carried out by Copaíba, sponsored by Petrobras, through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program, aims to conserve and restore the Atlantic Forest of the Peixe and Camanducaia river basins, located between the south of Minas Gerais and the east of the state. State of Sao Paulo. Land owners interested in receiving this support can contact us by phone: 19 9 9953-8382 or by email: [email protected].
