Copaíba Environmental Association begins working with government to advance the sustainability agenda in 19 municipalities in the region
The process is carried out by sending an Environmental Platform, accompanied by an official letter, and should benefit more than 340 thousand people.
With the aim of offering subsidies so that public authorities' actions are aligned with the protection of biodiversity, the population's quality of life and the confrontation of climate challenges in the region, Copaiba Environmental Association sent the Environmental Platform to the elected officials in the municipalities of the Peixe and Camanducaia river basins last week.
The document, also available for public consultation at site of the Association, outlines general provisions for environmental policy, actions to combat the climate crisis, initiatives to contain fires, environmental sanitation programs, solid waste management strategies, practices that contribute to a reduction in pollution (air, noise and visual), procedures to improve the management of water resources, guidelines on the application of environmental education, among other suggestions for conduct so that mayors and councilors can advance the region's sustainable agenda throughout the term that begins in 2025.
The platform is based on the Federal Constitution, which establishes that everyone has the right to an ecologically balanced environment — this being a common good for the people and essential to a healthy quality of life — and is part of a scenario in which the contacted municipalities, located in the Atlantic Forest biome, have an average of 4% of remaining native vegetation, well below that established by environmental legislation.
According to Camila Conti, president of the Association, the Copaíba initiative has become a tradition and highlights how issues such as conservation and restoration of forest fragments, water security and adaptation to the impacts of the climate crisis are urgent and require immediate and coordinated actions. “Given the relevance of the issues contained in the document, we are counting on the commitment to ensure that the proposals presented can be taken into consideration and incorporated into municipal public policies in current administrations,” she points out.
The president of the Association also emphasizes that, through this action, Copaíba expects the population to contribute to the monitoring and monitoring of the commitment made by the municipal authorities.
