Copaíba Forest Nursery prepares seedling production for the rainy season
Copaíba has been producing seedlings of trees native to the Atlantic Forest, in its forest nursery, for almost 20 years. The Viveiro, which started producing few seedlings, from seeds collected in the forests of the region, today continues to receive native fruits and seeds, but for the annual production of hundreds of thousands of seedlings.
To produce so many seedlings it is necessary to have a good work team and also an appropriate infrastructure. In recent months, thanks to the Verde Novo project, sponsored by Petrobras, through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program, Viveiro Florestal Copaíba has increased its production of seedlings, and for that, several adaptations are necessary. The most recent was the installation of seedbeds – an environment where seeds germinate to form seedlings. The new seedbeds have enough space to receive all the seeds necessary for the production of seedlings throughout the year.
The new seedlings will contribute to the production of seedlings that will be donated to landowners interested in recovering the forests on their properties. In all, 150,000 seedlings will be donated, for the recovery of almost 100,000 m2 of degraded areas.
The adaptations were also made considering the well-being of the production team. “The old seedbeds are replaced by higher beds, which help in the ergonomics of the production team. This is essential to guarantee the quality of our work, also taking care of the health of those who take such good care of our seedlings”, comments Flávia Balderi, coordinator of the Verde Novo project.
The Copaíba Forest Nursery is open to visitors. The monitored visits are scheduled at Copaíba's institutional headquarters.
