In the Mogi Guaçu river basin, concerned about water scarcity and the compromise of its productivity, International Paper do Brasil joined forces with WWF Brazil to develop the project “Recovery of the sources of the Mogi Guaçu river”, with the objective of promoting the restoration of springs in priority areas on the Mogi Guaçu River and its tributaries.

To assist and consolidate the planning of the project's strategies and actions, two workshops were scheduled to be held in the region with the participation of environmental entities, technicians representing public environmental agencies in the municipalities involved and also the private sector. The second one took place in Socorro, on May 28, and was supported by Copaíba.

According to Christian Giustina, geologist and coordinator of the “Partial Report of the Nascentes do Mogi Guaçu project”, the priority areas within the Mogi Guaçu river basin for forest restoration, considering hydrological and ecological criteria, are the two Espraiado sub-basins. and Alto Peixe. “The Alto Peixe sub-basin encompasses our region and this initiative is a great opportunity for us to join efforts to recover our forests and protect our water resources. We are together in this endeavor”, comments Flávia Balderi, coordinator of Verde Novo, from the Copaíba Environmentalist Association.

For Daniel Venturi, Conservation Analyst for the Atlantic Forest Program at WWF Brazil, the workshop in Socorro was excellent, with representatives from the São Paulo and Minas Gerais governments, in addition to the presence of organizations and collectives that also work in the landscape. “Challenges in forest restoration in the region were shared and opportunities and synergies were identified. He left happy with the contributions, so that we can have an even greater impact on the recovery of this basin, which is so important for the population that lives in it”, comments Daniel.

The actions continue, the next steps will be dedicated to consolidating the contributions received and planning the forest restoration of the areas of these two sub-basins of the Mogi Guaçu.

See again

O See again is a project carried out by Copaíba, which is sponsored by Petrobras, through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program. The project aims to contribute to the forest restoration of the Peixe and Camanducaia basins. To date, 350,000 seedlings have been planted, which are contributing to the forest restoration of 2.3 million m2 of areas in the region.

WWF

WWF-Brasil is a non-governmental organization of Brazilian civil society, constituted as a non-profit civil association that works to change the current trajectory of environmental degradation and promote a future where society and nature live in harmony.

International Paper

International Paper is a global leader in paper and packaging with manufacturing operations in North America, Latin America, Europe, North Africa, India and Russia.
