Faced with the new routine and obstacles that Brazil and the world have been facing due to the new virus, COVID-19 (coronavirus), much has been said about the effects of the pandemic not only on the health of the population, but also on the economy. We know that recovery will be a big challenge, but what about the environment? What are the impacts of the pandemic on the planet?<\/p>\n
Some websites reported the reduction of carbon emissions (CO\u00b2) due to quarantine. This happens because the circulation of people, vehicles and other means that emit carbon has decreased, but it is not enough to remove the burden of these pollutants from our planet. It is a one-off decrease that will not generate long-term changes.<\/p>\n
With the population staying at home, the amount of domestic waste generated increased and so did the consumption of gas, water and electricity. In hospitals there is a drastic increase in patients, consequently the amount of hospital waste has tripled, in some countries it is even greater. And finally, issues related to global warming issues were in the background.<\/p>\n
The NGO Copa\u00edba does not want these issues to go unnoticed, so it seeks several ways to raise awareness of the importance of offsetting carbon emissions. This is possible by planting native trees. \u201cEach Brazilian emits an average of 8 tons of carbon per year and to compensate for this, it is necessary to plant native trees\u201d comments Fl\u00e1via Balderi, Executive Secretary of the institution.<\/p>\n
Knowing that not everyone is available to plant these seedlings, Copa\u00edba found two ways to facilitate those interested in offsetting their emissions: the first is to be a contributor through the \u201cFriend of Nature\u201d program. Contributions are reversed in plant seedlings.<\/p>\n
The second option is through Tree-Nation. Online platform that brings together and coordinates the reforestation efforts of several countries. People from all over the world are able to buy seedlings of trees native to the Atlantic Forest and Copa\u00edba plants these seedlings on partner properties. More than 9 thousand seedlings have already been planted by the institution through the purchase of seedlings by Tree-Nation.<\/p>\n
